APP Spreadsheets

I’ve been trying to work out the most efficient and effective system in using APP for personalised assessment. Previously to this, I have selected 6 children for Maths, Reading and Writing and gathered evidence for them on a termly basis. This has worked fairly well, particularly for Literacy. With Reading, I have then filled out an individual grid for each child in the class which has really helped me track gaps and decide on next steps. I have wanted to use a system that would also work on an individual basis for Writing and particularly Maths as I have found the APP grids for it to be a little less easy to access than the Literacy grids.

I will still gather evidence for 6 pupils but instead of filling out the paper grids half termly then not doing an awful lot with them until the next half term, I will update my assessments for those pupils into a spreadsheet at the end of each Literacy or Maths unit. After this, in the same spreadsheet, I will assess the other members of the class. This will allow me to monitor progress and reflect on the best way to move children on all from one location. I won’t need to thumb through 30 grids and work out where there are correlating gaps or next steps to develop as a group, I can simply sort the spreadsheet by the APP statement within a level.

In short, I want APP to play a crucial role in setting next steps rather than being used purely as a summative assessment. I have made the Google spreadsheets copiable so if this is something you think might help in your classroom, please make a copy by clicking the links below and they will appear in your Google Docs list. Simply add a ‘1′ into any cell where that child has achieved that APP statement. The cell will then turn green allowing you to easily spot gaps or you could sort the column. I don’t know how manageable it will be yet but I believe that the extra effort will be worth it!

Ever find yourself thinking about things you need to do at 3am in the morning but then completely forget what they are when you wake up? Ever sit down in front of a computer and then can’t remember any of the thirteen things you are supposed to be doing? Then www.rememberthemilk.com is for you!

In its simplest form it is an online task list. Which is just what I use it for – one place for your task list that can be accessed from any PC, no bits of paper to lose, no Outlook to boot up and sync.

The nice touch with rememberthemilk is you can have different task lists (e.g. one for a coordinator role, one for you as a class teacher, one for personal stuff etc should you choose to). You can also set the priority of the task, so you know very simply and easily which tasks are high on your hit list!

That’s as much as I have used the system for but you can go further and share tasks with people and also set due dates and then view tasks that are overdue etc.

It’s all free to sign up to and works very nicely thank you very much!

Online Bookmarks – Delicious

Being a busy teacher, using several different machines (home PC, laptop, class PC’s, PPA room PC etc) I find it useful to be able to access all my bookmarks / favourites whichever I am on. Bring in http://delicious.com/ a way of not only keeping all your bookmarks in one place but also searching what other people are bookmarking. The use of this is you can therefore discover sites that you might find helpful in your teaching that you wouldn’t have otherwise come across.

There are several other sites such as http://www.stumbleupon.com/ - http://digg.com/ - http://www.reddit.com/ that basically do the same kind of thing. It’s down to personal taste as ever, I just think delicious is nice and simple, has an easy download so that you can have it as a button in your web browser whatever it is. The tagging system is also very useful (ie. rather than a traditional folder where you have a bookmark in 1 folder you can ‘tag’ it with various words so it is easier to find when you can’t quite remember what folder you put it in!

You can even search for a user and view all their bookmarks!
